Canyoning vs Ghyll Scrambling... What's the difference?

So generally speaking, ghyll scrambling (sometimes referred to as gorge walking) is ascending mountain streamways and rivers using 'scrambling' and climbing techniques.

At Yorkshire Adventure Company, we spice our ghyll scrambles up to make them super exciting. They involve roped climbs up the watercourses - often inside the waterfalls themselves, and add in cool challenges and jumps along the way.

Some of our venues, like the Esk for example, is just full of humongous jumps into stunning remote pools.

Canyoning is similar to ghyll scrambling, but it's generally a bit more hardcore, and is descending mountain rivers. We use a range of techniques to descent the watercourse including abseils, slides, jumps and down-climbs.

Canyoning is by far my (Ben Ross, owner and lead guide) personal favourite activity ever! It's absolutely AWESOME! We LOVE what we do, so our entire focus is on giving you the very best experience, pushing your limits and giving you life long memories.

Canyoning - Yorkshire Dales - Beezley Falls

Our most popular venue in the Dales!

Awesome climbs, mega jumps, insane natural water slide and an abseil - all in the most beautiful county in England!

This adventure is an absolute treat and a firm favourite for all groups from couples to families to stag & hen groups.

Guaranteed giggles!

Canyoning - Howgills - Cautley Spout

Ok, this is a beast of a trip!

Tackle the enormous Cautley Spout - the highest cascading waterfall in England with 200m of descent.

This one is all about pushing your boundaries and tackling huge aquatic abseils. What it lacks in jumps and slide, it makes up for in sheer beauty.

Canyoning - Longsleddle - The Sprint

This is a super fun, more relaxed venue.

Longsleddle can take a lot of water and still be passable, so it makes a great wet weather option.

It's more about the ropework than the jumping and sliding, although there are a couple of cheeky jumps thrown in.

This is really popular with our military cadets and features an awesome traverse over an intimidating waterfall.

Canyoning - The Lake District - Church Beck (Coniston)

By far our most popular Lake District venue, and a very close 2nd most popular overall after Beezley Falls.

A personal favourite group venue for me - I just love it!

Ropework, slides, scrambles, abseils, jumps, it has it all. And what a stunning venue.

Suitable for all! We run this trip from the very top and descend all the way down. Only one other firm we know runs it like we do, and it's fantastic!

Multiple abseils and awesome views from the key to this absolute treasure.

This venue is better suited to smaller groups of up to 6 and will require personal ropework under supervision and with safety lines controlled by our guide.

By far our most popular ghyll scrambling venue.

Ascend the beautiful Stickle Ghyll by overcoming cool chanllenges and big exposed (but easy) climbs inside the waterfalls, then look back down the stunning valley while you're dangling around and soak it all in!

When other groups stop and turn back at the bottom of the upper falls, you will continue on up with final climbs to the top!

Duration: Allow 3 hours

Minimum Age: Officially 8, but pretty flexible
